Hypocrites

For hypocrisy above and beyond the pale…

Gloria Steinem — September 2008

On September 4, 2008, Steinem wrote in the Los Angeles Times, stating: “McCain could have chosen a woman who knows what a vice president does and who has thought about Iraq; someone like Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison…” But in 1993, Steinem impugned Hutchison, calling her a “female impersonator.” Of course, when you throw as many bombs as Steinem, you’re bound to forget a few of the casualties.

The New York Times — September 2008

In 1984, the Times defended Geraldine Ferraro (D) — Walter Mondale’s VP pick — arguing: “Where is it written that governors and mayors, like Dianne Feinstein of San Francisco, are too local, too provincial?… What a splendid system, we say to ourselves, that takes little-known men, tests them in high office and permits them to grow into statesmen… Why shouldn’t a little-known woman have the same opportunity to grow?” But in 2008, the Times vociferously criticized John McCain for selecting the “mayor of a tiny Anchorage suburb” — Sarah Palin (R) — for her supposed lack of experience. Obviously, the Times‘ opinion depends on whether someone has a (D) or (R) behind their name — and not the merits.
